trails: chemin gosford, chemin clearwater, chemin de la grive, atv trail, border swath

conditions: hiked in from canada through mont gosford park. large plowed area for parking across the road from entrance station. they have a self registration system, all in french, that took me a bit to decipher and a small fee to hike into the park. the roads were all snowmobile packed up to the sandpit at the end of chemin de la grive. the atv trail was untravelled and the start not obvious due to snow depth. basically bear right down hill from pit just past the moose swing set and cross the brook. look for the "cowboy with a gun" sign and the corridor is just to the right of it. some snowmobile tracks went different ways in this area destination unknown. i was punching in 4-6 inches through a thin crust to the solid base below up to the border swath which was basically a packed snowmobile highway to the summit of boundary marked by a sign ("panther") and canister i could not get open despite some effort. the brook crossing beyond the sandpit was still mostly buried in snow.

equipment: i wore microspikes to chemin de la grive then snowshoes to the summit.

comments: after hiking out of baxter state park yesterday and checking the forecast the window for attempting boundary this winter had gotten quite small so i drove down to stratton and treated myself to a motel stay heading into canada early this morning. it was a chilly -9 degrees to start and remained pretty cold up to the summit. it's about an 8 mile road walk up to the sand pit (just over 20 miles to the summit round trip), but it went surprisingly fast once i got going. beautiful views from the border swath and summit and in general a gorgeous day to be outside. didn't see a soul the whole hike. a pretty awesome day to finish the winter 100 highest.
