Sounds like you have a solution. I've found that putting my warm tap water bottles inside my double fleece mitts upside down in my pack worked. (They were actually in an insulated pocket outside the pack)

The bottle on my waist belt is kept in an old wool sock and on the coldest of days would get a little chunky near the end when I was done. The larger threads are easier to turn than some of the bottle with smaller threads. Always bring a pint thermos on longer winter trips or trips with kids with hot water. In my case, drinking cold water is not an issue, apparently you need a brain for an ice cream headache. :D Also no issue with getting cold while hiking, even with the pit- zips wide open. (I wear a vest)
