WOW! 96 loons and counting ... and I was impressed last week on Lobster Lake, Maine, when we saw 6 and that built up to 10 in 2 days. One thing different, apparently, was that most of the loons we saw already had their winter plummage. I wonder if it is early for that or if it suggests winter is nearer than usual?
That is a lot of loons!
I was recently out fly fishing on a pond and a loon came over to see what was up. It proceeded to get within arms reach (I could have actually reached out and touched him!). It then dove back and forth under the boat for the rest of the day and even took a fish off the line (the only one I hooked with it being around the whole time). I couldn't believe how close it got, it would swim under the boat and pop up right next to me, and just look at me.
