Trail Conditions: Parked at the Cog Railroad parking lot and took the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. The winter route starts behind the small brown cabin uphill from the parking lot. The first 1.5 miles of trail were hard-pack snow with a light dusting. The steep section of trail before the alpine zone was just hard packed snow. Really hard packed. In the alpine zone the trail became frozen, icey, hard packed snow. The Monroe Loop was similar to this, with several large frozen snow drifts that made things a little interesting The Ammonoosuc is really easy to follow below treeline, but once in the alpine zone it virtually disappears. The Monroe Loop was extremely hard to follow as well. No issues with blowdowns or water crossings.
Special Equipment: We wore crampons the whole time. Others wore snowshoes or barebooted most of the route. I definitely recommend crampons and an ax for the more technical stuff above treeline.
Comments: Sweet birthday hike even though no summit views due to crazy clouds. Thanks to Sam for helping us finish the hike.
