Trails: Metacomet-Monadnock Trail now known as The New England National Scenic Trail

Conditions: We joined the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail from Rte 141 near The Log Cabin. The trail was a well defined snowshoe trail that was well packed out. It was kind of surprising since the last snow storm ended yesterday. We also saw tracks following the power lines up to Mt Tom. As we approached the summit, tracks started to split up going in different directions and the trails were not as packed out as before. It appears most people only went to Mt Tom and then back to their cars. We continued on the M-M trail. It looked like only one person had continued on beyond the summit and that was yesterday. It wasn't long before this person strayed from the trail and was bushwhacking it. We followed the blazed trail. We were now breaking the trail since the last storm. On average we were sinking in about 12". We also encountered numerous drifts with some as deep as 3 feet. From time to time the bushwhacking tracks would return to the M-M trail and then go off on their own again. At one point there were even some ski tracks on the trail. The last .5 miles of the M-M trail before we came upon the road in the park was already broken out by other snowshoers and one barebooter. Once we hit the road we walked out of the park on the road.

Special Equipment: Snowshoes are the way to go. From Rte 141 to Mt Tom you may be able to bareboot the trail because it is pretty well packed out. Beyond Mt Tom you really need to have snowshoes on.

Comments: We started our hike at 8:15 am. We didn't see anyone on the trail today, but then again we had an early start. There were plenty of people walking on the roads in the park. Thanks to my neighbor Dan for coming on this hike with me and helping to break the trail.
