Mt. Madison via Valley Way from Lowe's
Dates of Hike: 1/13 - 1/14
Appalachia was not plowed out on 1/13, so we parked at Lowe's, paid for parking, and walked two miles along US-2 to Appalachia. On 1/14, Appalachia is nicely plowed out, suitable for any car.
Trail Conditions: Powder, Packed Powder, transitioning to Ice and Rock above treeline. Valley Way had seen considerable traffic and is now packed out up to Madison Hut. No other intersecting trails are broken out, except Airline (I didn't hike Airline, I only observed it from its junction with Valley Way). No downed trees or anything else of that nature.
From the Hut upwards to Madison summit, there is little snow. Rock predominates, with many patches of ice and a few snowdrifts.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - useful below treeline; Crampons - essential above treeline
Comments: Spent night near hut. 15+ hikers started a southbound presi traverse on 1/13, so those trails may be broken out (or they may not be).
