Conditions: Three words, ice, ice, ice. All trails are mostly ice flows right now. Ice flows present where I've never seen them. Some rock tops showing but not enough to rock hop and the ice is very slick. Lots of impressive ice falls in the usual spots. Ice flows more than a foot thick cover large sections of trail. Most of the ice is very hard so good traction necessary.
Equipment: Highly recommend Hillsounds or better. Microspikes just marginally adequate. Poles for sure along with other winter gear.
Comments: Still were folks trying to bareboot yesterday even after all the warnings by Park Rangers. Saw some who made it up but were having heck of a time trying to get back down. Saw lots of falls and slides. Would be amazing if there were no serious injuries. Not sure how a carry out could be done, if necessary, in those conditions. Ran into one guy descending Spellman. He had ice axe and micros. He said it took him one hour to descend 2/3 of that trail, usually a 20 min descent. Amount of ice has caught even the regulars by surprise.
