trails: champney falls trail, bolles trail, bushwhack

conditions: some real shoulder season conditions on the trails. up to the height of land on bolles there was often 1-2 feet of wet rotting snow with many significant bare patches along the way. the route was not always immediately evident around the numerous brook crossings where tropical storm irene clearly left her mark. in the hardwoods on the final ascent to the height of land the snow was melting fast with a number of long bare patches. from the height of land i left the trail to the west aiming for a notable plateau south of the summit of ne paugus. woods were dry and snow free to start with one steep pitch before entering a nice stretch of open woods with moderate grades up to the plateau. still some pretty deep snow in one section just below the ridge line. turning north i hit some considerably thick going with blowdown that soon transitioned into a more mature coniferous forest before one last scrappy pitch to the summit. just a bit north from the highpoint is a fine view ledge. water crossings were numerous and all rock hoppable today.

equipment: i had snowshoes on and off over the course of the hike.

comments: nice hike to this northern spur of paugus. lots of moose sign on the bushwhack up the peak and good woods but for a couple sections on the ridge south of the high point. as i had hoped based on views from other angles there was a cliff top ledge up near the summit with a fantastic view to chocorua and mt. blue. great peak.
