Originally cut out by ski legend Peter Ruschp in the early 70s this trail was abandoned and nature took over. Over the past year volunteers of the Stowe Conservation Commission have been granted permission to restore this cool trail that traverses the top of Sterling Ridge. At one point there is a fantastic view onto Mt Mansfield and the wild backcountry to the east of Spruce peak.
CONDITIONS: fantastic blue sky & cold (19°) ; frozen mud at the bottom (newly reworked Martson Trail), moderately steep with 5.5" new snow on the ridge
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: none- gators beneficial as well as good orienting skills
It should be noted that this trail is intended to be a winter use ski trail and that it is still under construction- that said, a strong word of caution: this trail has extremely minimal marking. Furthermore, the mountainside forests have been heavily logged over many generations resulting in a confusing mosaic of logging roads that could confuse someone. Since the trails up & down are on the east side of the range, the light disappears quickly and there is no cell service in the vast Sterling Valley.
Descent via bushwhack to explore a brook drainage and amazingly stumbled across the ruins of the Martson Farm turned Logging Camp (abandoned in the 40s)
