Trail Conditions: We started out in freezing rain which turned to snow. We took the ski area route marked with red "uphill access" signs; the ski area is completely CLOSED (for the entire winter apparently, or until someone ambitious buys it) but the road to the base is being plowed out. There is no snowmaking, lift action, or amenities, and the warming huts are all locked up. Icy spots on the uphill route can be avoided by walking on the grass to the side. The AT and side trail to the top of the ski area were well marked and easy to follow to the Horn. It's important to take note of the turn back to the ski area, which is marked by a sign, and not head S on the AT upon return. There was significant, thick ice, black and blue, from Saddleback to the S-H col, both from runoff and compaction. Just enough snow to make light traction not too helpful. Lots of grabbing onto trees. Otherwise, ice was moderate and limited to small patches. Snow began to accumulate to about 3" by the time we exited at 2pm, with some shallow drifting up high.

Special Equipment Required: We brought spikes but wished we'd taken crampons, too.
