We donned our snowshoes at the gate house and never removed them until we got to the gatehouse on the way out. Others were skiing the Lake Road very successfully. The Weld Trail was perfectly broken all the way to the Gothics/Sawteeth Junction. Those ahead of us had gone to Gothics, but we had our hearts set on Sawteeth, so the two of us broke out the last half mile through 10-20 inches of powder. Sometimes my pole would totally sink and disappear along side of the trail, so we were glad we managed to stay ON the trail. One icy ledge near the end of the ascent required a very light detour to the left, where their were useful handholds. A sunny summit with no wind was our reward.
