After reading Bill and Judy's trip report from Schunemunk Mountain a few weeks back, I was inspired to head back and explore new parts of the ridge. I've approached the summit from the North and East so this time, I chose a South approach, via High Knob. The progression of biomes on Schunemunk is what I find most attractive about the mountain. At the very bottom, there are hardwood forests, mostly oak. High Knob consists of mostly scrub oak, pitch pine and the forest floor is blanked by blueberry bushes. The depression between High Knob and the ridge is a beautiful high elevation swamp. The ridge is a true wonderland of whaleback rocks and dwarf pine trees.
