The road from the Hogtown trailhead to Dacy Clearing was passable for any vehicle with a fairly high wheelbase, with lots of sharp rocks making the trip interesting. Leaving from Dacy Clearing, we encountered a couple who had just returned trying to take the Sleeping Beauty trail only to get lost because the sign at the first junction pointed ONLY to Bumps Pond (left), leaving the right turn unsigned. So they went to Bumps Pond instead. As we approached the T towards the ridgetop where the left turn takes you to the summit (0.1 mile) and the right turn goes to Bumps Pond, again there was no sign. As it turned out, another couple just ahead of us were about to take the (wrong) right turn when I called out to them and advised them to go left instead, for which they were very grateful. The problem here is that the trail is abysmally poorly signed and marked. The DEC SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. This has not been fixed in several years, since we also got similarly lost c. 5 years ago when we took the same route, never finding the summit.

So, if you are going to take this very lovely scenic trip with the most spectacular top in Lake George area, be warned:
1. From Dacy Clearing, at the first trail junction, don't take the left to Bumps Pond. Take a right to the unsigned trail.
2. Near the top, the trail is not clear. Try to follow the blue markers. If this doesn't work, and you get to the "T" , take the left turn which is unsigned. The right turn has the blue markers, which go to Bumps Pond. This is where the confusion lies, since people naturally follow a trail with markers rather than one without.

Just before the summit, the DEC, in its wisdom, has actually put a sign saying "summit 0.1 miles." But the short portion of the trail leading up to this sign is hard to find, and most people don't see it, rather going to the T junction, where there is no sign. So that beautifully crafted "summit 0.1 miles" sign is essentially useless.

Your tax dollars at work.
