Hiked Snowy (elev 3899', gain 2100', about 7 mile walk, over 4.5 hours with long lunch break) Sunday 5/15/5. Nice views from the highest fire tower in the DAX. Weather just about perfect. Almost no bugs. Trail a little muddy and slippery, but well maintained. Still some snow at the top. Water available everywhere, including spring near summit.

P.S. Lake George's Adirondack Pub and Brewery is still open!

camping at snowy

Hey, I was wondering what sort of camping is availble in the Snowy Mt. area. I have an old topo of the area and it shows a bunch of campsites along the shore of the lake. I was curious if they are first come first serve or if they need to be reserved and through who? Also are small outboards allowed. I have a 14' rowboat with a 9.8 hp motor. My son and I would to combine a hiking trip into a fishing/camping trip asumming there are any fish in Indian Lake, seems that there should be some trout lurking in the depths.

If you are referring to the campsites on Indian Lake, they are part of the State Campground, which you would have to pay for to use. I’ve never fished Indian Lake, but I know it has lake trout in it and probably land locked salmon. I'm fairly sure there aren't any motor restrictions on the lake as well.

There is quite a bit of free campsites at mason lake, down the road from snowy. You can drive down the dirt road, and pick a developed site. Fire rings at most of the sites, but the gate was closed as of two weeks ago. It should be open by now. Good access to the pillsbury mtn trailhead in there too.

Snowy

Tom great pictures, looks like you had a beautiful day. Congratulations on the article in the TU Newspaper maybe more folks will accept the challenge and treat themselves to a brew or two. See you at the 46er dinner.
