Trail Conditions: It has snowed since we did this, but for what it is worth: Only a few patches of snow on 12/25. CVR was passable by 2WD with moderate clearance the entire way to AT but mud could be a problem in wetter conditions. I fishtailed a bit with my Honda Fit. 4WD recommended. Last bridge before AT has holes in decking but beams are very solid and closely spaced. Place your tires strategically. Overall, AT and Sugarloaf side trail in good shape, with lots of compaction ice on the Crockers and between Spaulding and Sugarloaf. Less so on the herd path from S. Crocker to Redington which was flagged in places and should be easy to follow until the trees load up with snow. Begins just before the viewpoint on Crocker, picks up and follows the NPS boundary swath w/ yellow blazes briefly. Before they plunge dowhill turn sharply S off the swath toward Redington. Near the col, turn L uphill (E) at a logging road to the col, then right (S) at the col toward Redington, passing the turnoff to the turbine trail about 0.2 before the summit. Reverse to this turn to descend to the CVR via the turbine trail and logging roads. Logging roads in CV were in good shape with some muddy spots, no ice, and one sketchy looking but still safe logging bridge over the river in the valley. The skid trails we followed to the lower cone of Spaulding were last harvested in 2003 but are still easy walking between the regrowth. Moose are making high use of it and chewing down the new trees. Our 0.2 bushwhack from there to the AT was via easy open woods.

Special Equipment Required: We needed light traction.

Comments: Our route: AT from Caribou Valley Road, flagged herd path to Redington, turbine path to Caribou Valley, various logging roads and skid paths + an 0.2 easy bush to the AT 0.4 S. of Spaulding, AT, Sugarloaf side trail, ski trails down. The route through CV, including the short bushwhack, was easy. kml available upon request.
