What is this structure on Middle Sister? There is some electronic equipment inside.

That is a solar-powered radio repeater.

I only know because some time ago a very unique picture of it was used in an AlpineZone guess the peak contest.

The structure is the remnants of the old Fire Tower .

You are both right, some radio equipment was added to the old fire tower base

Beat me to the punch, I was going to pose the same question. Last week was my first time and Chocorua and Middle Sister, and we wondered the same thing.

Fire tower VS lookout

Actually the fire watch station on Middle Sister was a lookout, not a tower. Due to the configuration of the site, a tower wasn't necessary. There were several lookouts with no actual tower. I believe that the lookout on Garfield was of the same design. Much cheaper to construct.
