Rocks. I see rocks!

Alas, I mainly see the rocks in the trail where I'm about to step.

Then, if the going isn't too arduous, I see the low plants and flowers right next to the trail. Also toads and snakes.

Next I see the blazes and cairns when I realize I've lost the trail and look up to get back on course.

Finally I see the trees (and stars!) after I've whacked my head on the low-hanging branch I hadn't noticed.

You say there's a forest beyond the trees?

Bob K summed it up pretty well ... when the footing necessitates attention, I see a trail surrounded by forest, but whenever I can, I try to lift my eyes, lift my head, and see the forest with just a trail passing through it. Sometimes it means stopping for a moment and taking in a breath with the eyes and ears, though. Other times it means a special hike meant just for the experience of being in the woods, not racing a clock.

I also see the ghost of Dr. Wu's Uncle Freddie.
