conditions: We encountered lots of new snow. We had to break out the trail all the way to Lake of Clouds except for a section part of the way to Gem Pool which had been used by skiiers.The snow is deep, lose and slippery on the steep sections even after being broken out. Water crossings were frozen.
special equipment: We used snowshoes all of the way to the summit of Washington. Snowshoes are needed at least to Lake of the clouds.
comments: We had to work hard to get to get to Lake of the Clouds but the pay off was big. It was as good a Winter day above treeline as one could wish for. Winds wee low, sun was out and the visibility was spectacular. We could not have hoped for a better day to start the Winter season. It was great running into Glen again. The three of us...Eric (Tuco), Andy & I will be talking about today for a long time (it was one for the books).
