Date of Hike: 1/12/08
Trail Conditions: All conditions encountered: spring thaw, muddy below, EXTREMELY icy on the slabs - especially the backside of Welch, trail broken for the most part.
Special Equipment Required: crampons - essential - stableicers won't cut it; had snowshoes, but didn't need them; standard winter gear.
Comments: Awesome day on the Welch/Dickey loop - definite VFTT. Only saw 4 other people on the trail. Cannot stress the importance of proper gear - no matter how the weather seems in Boston - or other non White Mtn areas. 1 person did not have crampons and struggled. Friends don't let friends hike without crampons. Also - another thank you for everyone who posts here - this information is invaluable when doing hike prep.
