Sleep Medication - Starnoc / Zaleplon

I was just wondering if any of you had used this type of sleep aid in regards to hiking? My guide out west told me he keeps starnoc in his kit for when he is in noisy huts or when he has to go to bed early for an alpine start. Apparently it has a half life of one hour and it is out of your...

Tripyramid - Whiteface - Passaconaway Loop

I've been itching to get on the trail and this weekend looks to be free for me. I've been studying the maps and the loop i'm proposing seems to be about 13.5 miles with about 4800 feet of elevation gain. Any comments on the Pine Bend Brook Tr versus the Sabbaday Brook Trail? Pine Bend looks...

Getting Lucky on the Lafayette Loop

All week the plan had been to do the Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty, and hopefully Flume loop and all week the forecast for Saturday was looking lousy. We knew there was another group climbing the Hancocks that day and that got my vote but my other two buddies wanted to try for Lafayette and turn...

    Full Dryloft or Bivy?

If you have a winter bag with full dryloft does a lightweight bivy like the "Bibler Winter Bivy" give you much value added? Would it be better to get a bag with a different finish and then add the bivy on top? -Shayne

Discovering the Whites on Tom, Field, and Willey!

I've been reading about the White Mountains on this site for over a year now but since I was working on my 46 I never got out there except for a quick hike up Mount Washington in 2004. So with the long holiday break my wife and I thought it was the perfect time to make the 5 1/2 hour drive down...

    48 Summits GPS Waypoints?

Is there a place on the web where you can download the waypoints for the summits of the 48? I've googled it and searched on this site but haven't found anything. Thanks, Shayne

    Forecast for the Whites?

I was thinking about heading over to The Whites for some holiday hiking but I'm getting a little scared off by the forecast, freezing rain... Driving in it will be bad enough... Has it started already? Is it snowing a little higher up? I'll hike in just about any weather but freezing...

    Big Slide - My 46th

So the day had finally come when I'd go for my 46. I hadn't hiked since the end of August because of an injury and I was hoping my fitness wouldn't have suffered too badly. With five people, my dog, and all the gear we jammed into my Subaru and headed down from Ottawa at 5:10am. I had hoped...

Sat. Nov. 19 - Big Slide for my 46

A bunch of us from Ottawa will be heading down to go for Big Slide tomorrow morning. We're hoping to get there around 8:30-9, if the driving goes ok. Hopefully the sun will come out on top and my leg will stay strong. Any tips on recent conditions? From recent reports it sounds like most of...

    Vasque Breeze GTX - Comments?

So the search for new boots has started. I finally wore out my Montrail Torre GTX's and my physiotherapist said I needed something with more arch support. I tried on pairs today and like the Vasque Breeze's but was wondering if they were stiff enough for ADK like terrain. Thought the mesh...

    New Boots - Doctor's Orders

So I've been going to my physiotherapist for my IT Band/Hamstring injury and she asked me to bring in my hiking boots. So I did and she immediately said new ones were in order. Soles were worn down and for me I need more arch support. So it looks like my old Montrail Torre GTX's have had...

    IT Band Injury?

So on my last hike up Haystack, Saddleback, and Basin on Saturday I felt a twinge in my right leg about halfway through the hike. It has stayed with me since. Today I went to a physiotherapist and she told i had an inflamed IT Band. She said I need to apply heat and stretch a couple times a...

Haystack, Basin, & Saddleback or Bust.

We had planned to do this route for over 2 months now. The guys I was going with have kids and needed a lot of lead time to get away. All week I was checking the forecast and all week it was saying rain. The plan was to drive out Friday night, hike in until we found a shelter, then hike...

    Cliff has a bad rap!

So Saturday was the day we would hike Cliff. Over the past couple of years I have heard nothing but bad stories about this mountain. It's horrible, it's a mud bath, the blowdown is insane, people only climb it if they are going to climb them all, etc. Simply put, we didn't find this to be the...

    Seymour - Saturday June 11

We got a group of 7 together and decided to hike Seymour. My wife with her sore knees was able to join us for the 9km approach which was a nice change. I was surprised by the bug situation. Until we hit the leanto's there was nothing. At the lean-to's the deer flies were pretty bad. The...
