    boots with support

I have a right ankle issue that requires boots with support. In the past, Asolo Backpackers have been good. I am thinking of getting a new pair, but want to know if anybody knows a brand that has the same quality of support but go higher up over the ankle, like plastic winter boots.

    last caribou

When I climbed Mount Caribou the other day, I didn't know that it was named for the last caribou in the region shot on its slopes by two brothers in 1854. Supposedly their names are carved on the summit. Does anyone know where on the summit their names are?

Does anybody know if Snow's Mountain Ski Area in Waterville is open for skiers in the winter now? On the Web, I only see that it is open in the summer to transport mountain bikers up to the slopes above. Yet climbing up the Cascade Trail to the Snow's Mountain service road, we saw a...

Herd Path from top of Rattlesnake

This Monday I hiked up Rattlesnake in Rumney with my friend. On the way down the loop, I had to visit the woods for a minute, and I saw a herd path heading north along the ridge. We decided to follow it way. It was marked with yellow tape, and had been cleared a little, but was rarely used. It...

    red rocks

One the shore of the East Branch and also on Cedar Brook, there are boulders with a reddish tinge where high water would hit them. My first assumption was that it was an algae, but a friend suggested it could be iron. Or it could be both. Does anybody know?

Mount Madison via Howker Ridge 11/12

Bare booted to summit in reasonable conditions. Snow cushioned footfalls, no ice underneath. Ate lunch on summit in no wind and fabulous views as clouds rose from valley. Over-ruled a Watson Path descent, it would have been crazy. Used microspikes on desent to hut and half way down Valley Way...

    norcorss pond Oct. 28

Had to take a lawnmower back to a Bartlett small engine repair place, and I damn well was going to take a hike up there, come hell or rain. No rain when I started into Nancy Pond at 9:30 a.m. Cascades very nice. Got to pond and substantial rain started. Got as far as Norcross Pond and turned...

    sunset hill

Here are some questions for Ossipee Range enthusiasts. Is the first lookout on the Mount Roberts Trail the one called Sunset Hill? Was the old carriage road that winds behind the present day stable built to reach it? We went up there for an evening stroll the other day, and got there...

    mount washington 10/6

Tuck Trail to summer Lion Head. Summit cone very pleasant with crunchy snow between boulders. Cloud cap with occasional sun that lit up Bigelow Lawn. Zoo-ish on top. Descent on Tuck trail via the bowl. Incredible day of clouds, foliage, sun rays, nice people on trails.

    John Hayes

I normally wouldn't write in the New York section, since I am a White Mountain groundhog, but myself and my hiking buddy Bob Gordon are concerned about somebody. About a month ago, John Hayes from North Conway drove out to a meeting of the ADK at Adirondack Loj. He hasn't come back. I...

I'm trying to post pictures with my comments and haven't figured it out. Anyone up for a step by step explaination of getting photos from Windows Vista to a post? Language in WV for Dummies too complicated. How about using the language found in Windows for One Celled Creatures?

    deer ticks

The question is deer ticks. Has anyone found them on their person during/after hiking in the Whites? I took a 5 minute walk in Moultonboro a week ago and found a female deer tick on my pants. I have a strong feeling they are moving north in the valleys at fast clip. What is it like...
