    Marcy Dam bridge washed out

I have read several reports about Marcy Dam, Duck Hole, and Rt 73 but have not seen anything about the status of Upper Works and the Lake Colden/Flowed Lands area. Does anyone have any news on these areas? Marc

    Ermine Brook Slide conditions?

I can't speak for that exact location but I was in Blue Mountain Lake this past weekend and there was about 3 feet of hard, supportive snow on the ground. In fact we didn't even need snow shoes, even while carrying almost 50 lb packs for a weekend trip. I would think you would be ok but...

Lake Arnold Trail - Feldspar LT

The NYSDEC website says the Lake Arnold Trail, just north of Feldspar lean-to, maybe impassable due to beaver activity. Anyone have an update as to whether this trail is passable or not right now. Marc

    Berkshire Backpacking

I am looking to do a three day/two night backpacking trip in the Berkshires in a couple weeks. Does anyone know of some nice hikes I might be able to check out? Looking for around 4 miles in to a lean-to with day hiking possibilites for the second day. The closer to I-90 the better but I...

    Lean-Tos in Johns' Brook Valley

Approaching from the Garden I know there are two lean-tos on the way into the Lodge. Are there any additional lean-tos closer to the lodge, around the trail to Big Slide? Marc

    Delorme Earthmate PN-20

I got this sweet gift for fathers day!!! Does anyone else have one yet? If not I can totally vouch for it. It is an awesome unit. The Topo 6 software is also very nice. You can download USGS 1:24000 quad maps as well as arieal and satelite imagery from Delorme's website and transfer these...

Trip Advice: Daks, Santanonis, Sewards, 4 Days

It would be a VERY long day to get all three Sewards and Seymour done in the same day. The Sewards are a very rugged range and their setup requires you to climb at least 4 peaks, counting back tracking, when you hike along the ridge. If it were me I would get the three done first then hike...

    Meeting Place in Saranac Lake

I am trying to coordinate a meeting place in Saranac Lake to meet up with some hikers coming up from Albany. Does anyone have any good suggestions about a place to leave my car for the day so we can only take one car to the trailhead? Marc

Flowed Lands - Livingston Point question

I have been around that way sevral times. Most of the time when it was dryer. The ground is somewhat squishy but it will support your weight with miniml sinking. Just wear a good pair of boots and you will be all set. You don't have to cross the Opelesant from there so even if its flowing...

    Best Marcy Approach Trail

I am planning on Hiking Gray and Marcy soon and was wondering what everyone thought as to the best approach. I am torn between coming in from Upper Works or a loop trip from ADK Loj to Lake Arnold and back via Van Hovenburg trail. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Are Yukon Jack snowshoes any good?

I think I have a piar of these. I know I got them at Sam's club about three to four years ago. I am not a hard core snow shoeer but do get out quite often on them. I have hiked five of the 46 peaks with them and never had any problems with them falling off...actually they have out performed...

    Pharaoh Mt from South

I am thinking of hiking Pharaoh Mt from the south this weekend. I'm not sure of the trail name but when I did it a few years back there was a ~50 foot section under 4-8 inches of water right at the begining of the trail. Has anyone been in that way recently who could give me an update on...

    Chafing

I had this problem a while ago. I decided the best way to go was to buy a pair of spandex shorts ever since then I have not had this problem. Creams and gels mights work but they could wear off and who wants to put stuff there anyway while hiking. Spandex is the way to go.

    Saddleback Cliff on Range Trail

So I did this climb yesterday. The bark is worse than the bite. Just like others here have said it is a series of short scrambles. Not really much to it at all. I did it by myself and had no problem getting up any of the sections. Actually it was probably one of the most fun parts of the trip.

    Saddleback Cliff on Range Trail

I am planning this hike sometime soon. So, everyone talks about the cliffs on the last 100 feet of Saddleback coming from Basin.....really, how difficult is it? I'm not scarded of heights but will probably be alone.
