We were planning to do the complete Grafton Trail loop in September, but it is looking like they are not going to have it open. We were looking for about 5 days of moderate hiking and hoping to stay off the AT for the most part. We have hiked extensively in the Whites, esp. in NH, and were looking for something new, but not too far away. Our fallback is to do some of the Long Trail, but I thought I would see if you have any other ideas.

You might want to look at a section of the Northville-Placid trail between Northville, NY and Lake Placid. Depending on your hiking speed and desired daily distance there may be several different section options for you. Ideally you would want to spot a second vehicle but there are ways around that if that won't work.
