Took a delightful short walk near Split Rock Falls in the Adirondacks Saturday.
For thos who don't know, SRF is the extremely popular swimming area on the Boquet, betweek malfunction junction and Elizabethtown. It was also the scene of the tragic drowning of four young men a few years ago; the upper swimming holes are very dangerous when the water flow is high.
I've been exploring the area laterly looking for previously unclimbed cliffs to play on. While older maps show the area East of SRF as being all private land, newer maps show a considerable area of state land on the E side of the river. I believe there has been a land purchase.
It's an easy walk along an old road, through attractive woods with several legal campsites. You go in just uphill of the Route 9 bridge.
Unfortunately, there is a tremendous amount of garbage in the area; I spent a while today bagging trash and carting it away. But that aside, it's a very pretty area.
Dining update:
The Tip-a-Canoe in Keene is closed (again). It's been on again off again for a while, as the current owners struggle to sell it.
It looks like work has started to rehab the Cliffhanger, after the fire. That's good news.
Of course the Ausable, the Baxter and the Noonmark are stalwarts, and always good.
Big news: The Deer's Head Inn (next to the Grand Union in Etown) has reopened, and it's fabulous! We ate there Saturday night (we had originally gone to the Ausable, but they were very crowded and the wait was a little too long). The new owners at Deer's Head have put together a great menu. The couple that owns it are both chefs, and it shows. Prices are medium (about the same as the Ausable) and the food is gourmet. It's nice to have another place to go and not have to go all the way to Placid.
