Looks Like hobble bush. You may have noticed some white flowers on other stems nearby. I call it horrible bush when bushwacking.

Was that seen recently on the Baldfaces? It is unlikely that any hobblebush leaves are not fully opened by now, but it does look like unfurled hobblebush leaves. Any other info or pics?

I vote for Hobblebush or Witch hobble - Viburnum alnifolium or lantanoides.
