Gunstock Mountain, Belknap Mountain, Piper Mountain via Gunstock Mt. Trail, Brook Trail, Saddle Trail, Blue Trail, White Trail, Old Piper Trail, Piper Trail

Date of Hike: Saturday, April 11, 2009

Trail Conditions: Bare ground, mud, frozen granular, blue ice

Special Equipment Required: Light traction

Comments:

Carriage Road gate not yet open. Park ranger was inquiring at the base later in the day about the amount of snow up high, so perhaps the road will open soon.

Gunstock Mountain Trail to Gunstock Mountain - mostly bare up to perhaps 1,800', then blue ice and frozen granular to summit. No blowdowns.

Brook Trail to Saddle Trail to Blue Trail to Belknap Mountain - upwards of 1-2' of frozen granular still remaining in places, lots of blue ice as well. I removed a few blowdowns, one or two may still remain.

White Trail to Old Piper Trail junction - some blue ice, otherwise dry.

Old Piper Trail to Piper Mountain - some blue ice, some mud, some frozen granular/monorail. Otherwise bare. Piper Mountain ledges from Old Piper Trail to highpoint were mostly bare.

Piper Mountain Trail - Blue ice up high, some periodic mud, otherwise mostly dry ground. Water crossing rock hoppable.
