I just read Steve Smith's Blog about a short hike thru Waterville Valley, when my memory was jogged. This summer, I walked down Livermore Rd and turned left onto Greeley Pond trail, when I started to notice drilling pipes every now and then. There had to be a least 6 to 10 of these drill sites. These looked like normal well pipes, capped, ready for use.

I assumed these where drilled to test the ground water. (But you know what happens when you "assume" something).

Am I wrong with my assumption? If I'm correct, what are they testing for, and who are "They".

Just wondering.

A couple of years ago, the USFS issued a permit to the town of Waterville to supplement their water system by drilling a well in the WMNF. Before the permit was issued, I believe they drilled a number of test wells to determine the best location. That may be what you saw.
