Date of Hike: 29 October 2011
Trail Conditions: Valley Way has two walkunder blowdowns that will come into play over the winter - one is significant, one not. Trails were all in good shape. A couple inches of snow over most of them and drifting to more than a foot in places above treeline.
Special Equipment Required: Sunglasses were welcome at times. I used microspikes coming off the summit cones of Adams and Madison. They were ideal in the mixed snow and rock conditions. Had on a fleece, shell, hat, gloves above treeline. Wore winter boots.
Comments: Beautiful day for a hike - loved walking in snow again! The summit of Adams was awesome with all the boulders covered in white rime and a moose laid lazily in the opening behind Madison Hut as I descended the Gulfside Trail and headed up Madison. The combination of white snow and brown/orange leaves still clinging on trees made for some unique views.
