There was a big story about that in the Denver Post last month. Sounds like a tremendous challenge- that's big country down there!!

I hope he put it somewhere on the CDT. It would be great if some thru-hiker found it. The only problem is that they would have to carry 40 pounds of treasure the rest of the hike.

Well, considering he would of had to put it there (unless he had help), hopefully it's on the GDMBR. Headed towards New Mexico myself this summer, probably wont have the time to get to NM though..

I actually don't like this idea at all - it'll encourage people to rip apart the land looking for it.

Agreed. Plus it will put unprepared people with different motives than regular hikers in an environment they are probably not ready for.
If you want to get your kids "off the screen" pack the car and plan an outing.
I think Montgomery Burns is behind this, D'Oh!

I think the instructions are vague enough, the density of people small enough, and the potential area huge enough that there won't be much of an impact, other than (hopefully not) a few people getting really lost. The NM backcountry is really empty for the most part.
