trails: long trail, west ridge trail, bear wallow trail, roadwalk

conditions: good parking at the long trail crossing on rt. 9. trails were in excellent shape. previous rain had left them damp to start, but mostly dry with great footing. one muddy section of note at the bottom of the bear wallow trail. this trail was also signed differentlly on the top than the bottom. at the trailhead it was signed as "bald mountain trail". the bushwhack to south glastenbury was quite short through open woods with some thicker sections of hobblebush. much of the same to the west peak though a longer bushwhack. note that the true highpoint is incorrectly marked on the gmc long trail map. the contour to the northeast is the actual highpoint as noted on the usgs. the long trail map also shows the west ridge trail going over the more southerly bump where in truth it stays much lower wrapping around to the west (as shown on the usgs). water crossings of note were bridged though the second bridge encountered on the long trail (hell brook i believe) was damaged and use was warned against. today there was a doable non bride crossing just down stream.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: beautiful day in southern vt. this hike had been on the short list for a while. great walking and phenomenal woods for the short bushwhacks. view from the firetower were awesome then a nice view south to greylock from bald mountain to cap off the hike. thanks to cynthia for a great long day.
