    Pillow for Backpacking?

I just bring an old pillowcase from home and stuff it with a fleece. It has the soft feel that a nylon stuff sack doesn't have. But you need to leave enough room in it to tie the open end in a knot or else the fleece will "leak" out at night.

    Favorite Trails for Trail Runners?

A question for the trail runners out there..... What's your favorite trail for running? I'm interested in thoughts on trails in the Whites, or ones that are local and closer to home for you. I'm particularly interested in easy to moderate trail runs (i.e., with little elevation gain and...

Koflach - inside ankle bang - anyone else?

I can't recommend any specific Boston-area ski shops. Some may be helpful and some may not. However, you may be able to pick up open cell foam at an arts and crafts-type store or a hardware store and you can just experiment with different shapes and sizes of pads yourself. A donut-shape of...

Koflach - inside ankle bang - anyone else?

If you're just looking for a quick-fix, I agree with jfb, except try using some open cell foam, which tends to be less dense than closed cell foam (and therefore less likely to generate a pressure point). I've used this on alpine ski boots with some success. You could try it on both the inside...

    Deuce Bigelow

Nice report.....I am truly jealous that you can be out the door at 5:30 and hiking in the Bigelow Range at 6!!! :)

    Seeking Utah hikes advice

LaVerkin Creek to Kolob Arch and beyond..... Audrey, A number of years ago (in 1997), we took this route, but did it as a two-day backpack, camping on the south side of the creek at a backcountry campsite. Great hike if you want solitude - we saw no one else the whole time. The hike past...

    What's in your "Fix" kit?

Not all that ingenious, but possibly most important IMO......extra batteries for your headlamp.

    Using ski trails.....

Here's a question I think I already know the answer to, but want to confirm: When completing the various "lists," can a ski trail be used as a hiking route to bag a peak? What if you climb up and ski down - would the peak still "count?" Thanks!

    Combining Two Sleeping Bags

Can anyone provide input on using two sleeping bags (one inside the other) to get a lower temp. rating than the two bags by themselves? I've got a 20-degree down bag and a 0-degree synthetic bag (it's actually probably about a 20-degree rating since it's relatively old and has been compressed...

    Opinions of 4-point crampons

I agree with Rick and others, especially on the above statement. The problem with insteps is how much of the surface area of the bottom of your boot isn't covered by a traction aid. Insteps just don't match up well with a person's natural heel-toe/heel-toe rhythm while walking. Because of...

    Hiking & Marathon Training

I'll be applying for NYC and if I get picked in the lottery, I'll do that one. If not, something else in the Oct-Nov timeframe.....possibly Portland, ME.

    Hiking & Marathon Training

Great feedback so far. Thanks. :) I should have been more clear in my original post - I am planning on doing the long runs as necessary. I wouldn't want to substitute "long hikes" for all of the "long runs." I was just wondering if one long hike could be used in place of one long run -...

    Hiking & Marathon Training

Later this year, I'll be training for my first marathon (in the Fall) while still trying to get to the mountains for a decent amount of hiking. I'd like to hear from anyone who has trained for a marathon on how it affected your hiking and vice versa. From what I have learned, a marathon...

    Exercise

I agree with Artex completely. Increasing your aerobic activity (and therefore burning fat) may give you that overall "fitness" you are looking for. By burning fat through aerobic activity, you may be surprised how toned your body can begin to look. Complimenting this activity with some...

    Easiest Hike that you thought.....

Gotta be my first trip up Washington (via Ammo) as a newbie in 1996. We had done Kathadin (up Cathedral) the year before and thought that was killer. So, with the idea that Washington was even higher  (oh my goodness!! ;) ), we thought it would be soooo much tougher. When we reached...
