    Pole recommendation?

I'm 240lbs and I put a ton of weight on my Leki Super Makalus. They've performed like champs. I put the same amount of weight on my old Komperdell's and they were always bent out of shape. -Shayne

    Pole recommendation?

Leki Super Makalu's hands down. They're pricey but I've had mine for over 3 years now with not many signs of wear. Before that I had a pair of Komperdell's and they would get bent out of shape after every hike. I justified the pricey poles to my wife by saying they would be much cheaper then...

    Jay range (NY)

Funny you should mention Pitchoff. I hiked Pitchoff with my wife the day before I did Jay. We got socked in by fog and I just knew I should have picked a clear day for it. Of course I'm being a little hypocritical here, as silly as I think lists are sometimes I discovered these other places...

    Jay range (NY)

The Jay range is simply awesome. I had a clear day as well and the views spectacular. It's nice to be able to walk a ridge and appreciate all the elevation you've worked hard to gain instead of just summiting and heading right back down. After hiking Jay I started thinking that lists were...

Winter shovel, nice to have or need to have

I brought mine on one winter outing. Started building a snow wall around the tent to block the wind, after about 10 minutes we decided to forget that idea and just crash out in our bags since we were exhausted from the hike. It always stays with me in the car though. -Shayne

    Vasque Breeze GTX - Comments?

I bought the Vasque Breeze's and right after I found a sweet mail order deal and bought another pair of Torre GTX's. I still prefer the Torres for ADK terrain and I wear them all winter too up to about -22C. I bring both sets with me when I go. Nice to have a dry pair for back to back days...

This land is my land...this land is your land...

No. But parks in my own country/province just feel more like they are mine then when I'm abroad. When I was out in Banff, Jasper, and Mount Robson last month I felt a lot of national pride that these fabulous places were in my country. Back home most of my peakbagging is done in New York and...

    Attendance plummets at Baxter...

That's a good point. I've never been to BSP, hopefully this September. For me it would be a 12 hour drive, so say at least $200 in gas, probably more like $300 and meals along the way. Two weeks ago, I left Ottawa at 8:30am and was driving in Banff National park just 6 or 7 hours later. All...

Sleep Medication - Starnoc / Zaleplon

I'm not talking about taking it continuously. What interested me about that particular sleep aid is that it is completely out of your system in 4 hours. Most over the counter medicines take at least 8 hours. Obviously I don't want to get hooked on anything which is why I talked to the camp...

Favorite National Parks groupings for family trip

I just got back from the Banff & Jasper area. I've pretty much decided I'll be spending a week or two there every year for the rest of my life, hence my vote. -Shayne

Sleep Medication - Starnoc / Zaleplon

Earplugs don't usually work for me. Interesting what you said about little effect on performance. I seem to be able to pull together a 12 hour hike after as little as 15 minutes of sleep, whereas if I was at work I'd be asleep at my desk by 10am. However, I can't do back to backs if I don't...

Sleep Medication - Starnoc / Zaleplon

I was just wondering if any of you had used this type of sleep aid in regards to hiking? My guide out west told me he keeps starnoc in his kit for when he is in noisy huts or when he has to go to bed early for an alpine start. Apparently it has a half life of one hour and it is out of your...

    Best Marcy Approach Trail

I did the loop from the Loj and back down Lake Arnold. If I had to do it again I would do an out and back via the Phelps trail (?). Lake Arnold just seemed like a long slog after Marcy. -Shayne
