    Allagash trip?

I was up there last summer with two buddies. We all have 14' kayaks with rudders, and we hung out with one of the rangers near our boats for awhile. He had no issues with rudders. Sorry if you meant something else....

    Rolling Ankles/feet

I'm with CTMQ_Steve.... I "stretch em out" with lots of hikes. I roll my ankle several times per hike, and have had it cause what I'll call a "controlled collapse" a few times :p It never hurts though, and usually I recover from my misstep and continue on. Usually the person behind me asks...

    Rattlesnake fire

Thats a great question!!! Fantastic question. I almost never post here(Lurkey Lurkey!!), however, I would like to know if anyone (SAR-EMT40 or Sardog1 perhaps??) knows the answer to this. I always hear about searches or other goings ons and wish I could just drop what I'm doing and go up and...

    /stove +/jetboil +/opinions

Jetboil I have used a whisperlite for many years and usually the cooking process is kicked off with a giant fireball and lots of cursing. I bought a jetboil maybe 2 years ago, and now the only reason I would use the whisperlite is for melting snow on winter trips with many people. I have used...

    Campground

Thats actually very helpful. I did call reserve america, and I could not make a reservation. They didn't know why though.....was it closed, not 7 days in advance etc. I did not know about the winter self serv mode though, so I guess I'll hope that theres still a site open friday night. Thanks!

    Campground

Thanks guys, good info to have. The plan we had in mind was to go up Tucks, but due to it being possibly unsafe, we were thinkin of going up boott spur and down lion's head, or maybe up and down boott spur, depending on time and conditions. Also, I looked at Barnes field, and the site for it...

    Campground

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into those tonight. I guess two more questions that comes to mind is if hunting is allowed in pinkham notch and how is the boott spur trail avalanche wise when the danger is high in Tucks? thanks

    Campground

Hi. A couple of friends and I are going to be driving up north late Friday night, and want to stay at a cheap campground that night, so we can get up early and only have a short drive to Pinkham notch Saturday morning. Can anyone tell me the closest campground to Pinkham notch that will be...

    Sleeping Pad Chair Question

So I've finally decided to splurge and get myself something other than a closed cell foam pad. I was thinking of the thermarest prolight 4 short, but I also saw this MOUNTAIN HARDWEAR Superlight 72 Chair Pad on sale at EMS. I really like the idea of the quick conversion chair (as opposed to...

    Carrigan Via Signal Ridge Overnight

Thanks for you answers so far. So people do camp on the summit? I don't think I'd go as far as to do that, but I would like to be reasonably close to the summit and maybe enjoy both a sunset and sunrise. Has anyone else drank the water from the well?

    Carrigan Via Signal Ridge Overnight

I'm thinking of heading up the Signal Ridge trail to Carrigan on Saturday, and camping somewhere along the trail Saturday night, and I have a few questions. First, what is the breakin/vandalism situation like at that trailhead? I read that it was notorious for that. Also, what are the chances...

    Jefferson Notch Road

Not so fast Looks like Jefferson Notch road will not be open for a few weeks. http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showa.html?article=54841 Road crews have begun repairing the significant damage to Jefferson Notch Road, which apparently happened when a piece of wood clogged a culvert on...

Conditions on Old Bridal Path and Falling Waters Trails?

Franconia Ridge I was up ther on Sunday. Falling waters trail was in good shape with low water crossings. There was some ice/snow on the upper section, but we made it up that without crampons. Going down FW, crampons or yax-trax might be helpful, but probably not necessary if your careful...

Can someone please explain the WMNF Huts to me?

You are not required to stay in any of the AMC facilities. You can camp almost anywhere if you follow the WMNF regulations. http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/white/recreation/land_above/backcountry_rules.html I have never stayed in any of the huts or in any of the tentsites when a caretaker was there...

    Fire Etiquette

Well, a buddy and I went to Liberty Springs for 2 nights which was fantastic. We were plenty warm without having a fire. It didnt seem like it would've been worth the effort, as we had enough to do melting snow and eating. We hiked over to Haystack and Lincoln on Sunday and that kept us warm...

    Fire Etiquette

Are fires allowed at backcountry campsites in the winter such as liberty springs or is that generally frowned upon? Hoping to do 1-2 nights this weekend and trying to decide on a good route. Obviously, a fire would be a welcome addition, but I don't want to be "that guy". Thanks :D
