    Possible Late April Pemi Traverse

Hello, I was wondering if anyone here has ever attempted a late April Pemi Traverse? What are peoples initial impressions of this? Depending on snow levels it seems snowshoes and microspikes would be mandatory. Any and all thoughts/comments are much appreciated. Thanks -Jonathan

Whiteface - Rollin's down Blueberry Ridge

Sat 27th Nasty conditions out with temp's in the mid 30's and rain for most of the hike, but a great day out. Main trail up to Rollin's is well broken out but snowshoes helped from sinking into the rain soaked snow. The ridge to Whiteface has been well traveled and def requires snowshoes...

    Winter Stove Favorites

It leaves the pot covered in soot so you need to keep it in a stuff sack or plastic bag so it does not get all over you stuff. It is very satisfyinf to use though as long as you have time and patience (i.e. it is not a fast boiler)

    Winter Stove Favorites

Bushbuddy Ultra It takes some practice and patience, but it is nice to be able to leave the gas at home. With one Esbit tab you can really get a good fire going. It takes more time to melt snow, but it is worth it in my book. Best of all the entire stove setup weights 5 ounces.

Wood Stove Usage in the WMNF

I have looked through the WMNF rules on fires and whatnot and I understand and agree with their fire policies, but I am wondering what their policy on small non-scaring wood stoves are? Does anyone know?

    Any Recent Break-in's at Appalachia?

agree I tend to use Lowes as well, it just tends to make the approach for a Northern Prezzie Traverse alittle longer. It also helps that the Cheif of the Police lives above the garage (according to the woman working the store) that tends to keep the vandals and theives away.

    Any Recent Break-in's at Appalachia?

Has anyone seen or heard anything about any car break-in’s at Appalachia lately? It really is a shame to have to factor this into where you decide to hike… Thanks guys

    Unsuccessful Season

I was wondering if anyone has ever had a very unsuccessful season. I swear not a single climb that I have attempted this winter has worked. From turning back b/c of a broken pack to impassable waist deep snow near Adams to winds that almost blew me off Lafayette the same Saturday that guy got...

    0 degree or -20 degree?

I guess I sleep warm I guess I will go against the grain and say I do use a 0 deg on some pretty cold nights. Three weeks ago I did a climb up King Ravine and spent the night out near the Subway in my 0 deg, DAS parka and Wild Things EP pants with a Gossamer Gear 3/8 foam pad and Bozeman Mtn...

    Lafayette to Garfield?

ouch never done it in the winter but the in the summer it was painful. It is constant ups and down on rocky and in some parts steep. Could be a good challenge in the winter though. Please note though that the last time I did this was a few years ago when I would tote 40-50 lbs on a single...

    Presidential Traverse details

Presi Traverse in the Winter Hello, good timing for this thread as I am planning a 1 day winter traverse in a few weeks depending on conditions. What would people recommend for water quantities for this type of trip. Obviously I carry equipment to melt snow, but how much do you tend to carry...

Lost Hiker on Mt Lafayette - FOUND!

I think I saw them I am pretty sure I saw these guys yesterday as I was up there at the same time. I was traveling up with my girlfreind and they flew by us. We were actually turned around 1/2 mile from the summit, but I could still see them further off in the distance. It is always an...

alo Hey all, I appreciate all of your posts. As it seems people are wondering, I am doing this with a climbing partner who has many years of winter experience in the Whites so we know what we are in for. We have our escape routes planned out and to make it even better my girlfriend will be up...

Seriously, would anyone who actually hikes or camps buy this?

I agree that this item serves no use for winter hiking, but if I was an all day resort skier it does not seem like a terrible idea. I will admit though that if somone figured out a way for hydration bladders to work in the winter, I would be all over it...
