    Lowe's Bald Spot 3-30-11

Today's hike was a short, sweet walk in the woods to a spot with a killer vista. It was a classic textbook hike up to Lowe's Bald Spot, taken straight from “Snowshoe Hikes in the White Mountains” by Steven Smith. Hikers: Old Lurp & myself Trails: Old Jackson Road from Pinkham Notch to Mt...

Black Snout & Mt. Shaw 3/14/11

Took a chance on the weather forecast for Sunday, and hoped that the sky would clear enough for some decent views later in the afternoon. The ride from Exeter was gorgeous and sunny until we turned west off of Rt. 16 in Ossipee. From there, we could see huge dark clouds hanging over the Lakes...

    Exploring Western Maine: Kibby & Caribou 5/30 & 5/31

Memorial weekend found Old Lurp and I heading north to do some exploring. We'd talked about hiking Kibby Mountain for years....before we were aware that it was one of the Fifty Finest, and certainly long before we caught wind (pun intended) of the Kibby Project. We called ahead and spoke to...

4/4/10 Lake Solitude & Mt. Sunapee

A perfect way to spend Easter Sunday. First hike of the year for Old Lurp and I, and the first since knee surgery last fall. Wanted to test out the legs on something tame. We took the Andrew Brook Trail, which starts on the west side of Mountain Road, just south of Newbury, NH. (Elev. 1340') The...

    Allagash Light (part one)

Well done! Your slide show is outstanding. Have done the Allagash trip several times and I don't think I could ever tire of it. You've captured the beauty of it perfectly. ---Kath

Elephant Mt Solo Bushwhack NEHH #81 9/6/09

Another very useful tool........snow. Gets you back to where you started. However, pushing through thick spruce that is heavily caked in the stuff can get old and very time consuming. We almost gave up finding the summit for fear of running out of daylight. We have a Garmin e-trex Legend, but...

    Help identify this flower

Thanks all. I feel so lucky to have spotted them. I had to go thrash about a bit to get to them and I took about ten different shots of them while my partner patiently waited. ---Kath

    Help identify this flower

No, just the 100 miles. It's a great time of year to do the 100 miles, as you meet many north-bounders finishing up their AT journey. I really enjoyed talking to them. Lots of interesting stories. The only chance that I am aware of to re-supply is White House Landing, which is at about mile 70...

    Slow-Poking the 100 Mile Wilderness 8/21-9/2

Sorry it took so long to get this report to you.. For some reason, my first few attempts would not go through. Maybe too lengthy? (just like the trip!) Seven or eight years ago, in the height of my peakbagging days, The 100 mile trek was a trip I was itchin' to do. But it kept getting put on the...

    Help identify this flower

Spotted these in Maine along the AT on the slope of White Cap Mtn. in the 100 Mile Wilderness. The stems remind me of Indian Pipe, but I've never seen one with flowers before. They were all alone and I never saw any more like them. Anyone know what they are...

    2 small peaks, 1 splendid day (Percival/Morgan, 3/15/09)

Been wanting to hike this loop for quite some time, having never seen the Squam Lake area, so "Oldlurp" and I set out from the Morgan trailhead on Rt. 113 in Holderness. The parking lot was buzzing with fellow hikers, and from what we could gather, most folks were planning do a clockwise loop...

    Monadnock Easter Sunrise

Breathtaking Sunrise Pics Awesome photos! Very inspiring.....I've been suggesting a sunrise/sunset hike to my partner for a while now. He thinks I'm joking. I'll show him your slide-show. Thanks for sharing, Kath

    Easter above W'saukee

I do not contribute much to the TR forum, although I spend many hours reading the accounts of others, thank you! I particularly love it when I read about or am able to see pictures of some of the lesser known, lesser traveled, or smaller mountains. I have been concentrating on these "little...

Mt. Blue on a Gray Day 3/16/08

MTNRUNR, we have no clue as to what the structure is, or what its function is. It had a very tall (maybe 50 ft.) antenna attached to it, and something resembling a solar panel on one side of the roof. Can anyone offer up any info? Kath

Mt. Blue on a Gray Day 3/16/08

Today's forecast called for a cloudy day with mild temps and little to no wind. Since Old Lurp and I were already in the area visiting his folks, we decided to take this last Sunday in winter to hike up Mt. Blue in Weld, Maine. Mt. Blue, at 3187 ft. is #49 on the Fifty Finest Peaks list. We both...

    Where am I?

Yup.......I agree with New Hampshire....definitely Liberty. When was this photo taken? I have exactly the same shot, only snow covered and minus you on the top. Nice one! ;) Kath

    Mendon-Killington-Pico Feb 11, 2006 (long)

Glad you met with success. Very entertaining report. Had to chuckle about the couple who "thrashed about", as you put it. That is exactly what Old Lurp and I did last winter, trying to fight our way up Mendon. I thought I had memorized every TR written for that hike, but we just could not find...

    Access to Moosilauke trailheads?

Planning to hike Moosilauke tomorrow. Never been in that area in the winter. Is Tunnel Brook Road plowed in the winter to the Benton Trailhead? How about the Ravine Lodge Road? I'm open to any suggestions by anyone who has been there recently. Thanks, Kath
