    Crampons suggestions?

Excellent point. I had this in mind when I cut the strap (despite already wearing the World's Largest Boots), and also left enough so that I can get in and out of the crampons without having to unthread the strap. Therefore, I still have a bit of a loose strap problem. As a "light"...

    Crampons suggestions?

I'm a winter hiking novice and found I quickly became proficient at putting on my G10s. I carry a small piece of closed-cell foam in the outside pocket of my pack (it's a loose pocket with no top, presumably for carrying a shovel). I whip out the foam, sit on it, unzip my crampon bag, snap the...

Doug Paul injured in a back-country ski accident

Doug, you have my sympathies on your bc skiing accident. Those are some pretty impressive injuries. You were *already* the most hard-core hiker/climber/skier I know - your newly acquired hardware will only add to the legend. I wish you a fast and thorough recovery, and would love to hike...

    Winter Gathering

It was great to meet so many vftt-ers in person! Saturday was fun staying up all night with the bonfire even if there was some Yankees fan hanging around. Sunday night's music featured MadTownie doing a mean Mick Jagger, complete with all the moves, and SherpaK's excellent work on drums...

    Winter Gathering

I'll be there tomorrow evening with assorted munchies (nuts, olives, etc.) and frozen puff pastry appetizers - hopefully there will be a way to make them unfrozen. It sounds like UFC has plenty of propane. And, of course, I'll bring some good beer. And my camera. You've been warned. I may...

    Gear above treeline

If you do decide to give the contact lenses another try, I highly recommend daily disposable lenses. They're around $1.40 a pair now - much cheaper than all those fancy goggles. :) Mine are toric to correct for astigmatism. Lenses have improved significantly in the past five years.

    Four questions about crampons

Locally, REI and EMS carry only the BD and Hilton's carries the Petzls. I have fit the BDs to my boots and they fit properly, but based on the accumulated wisdom of this board I'm going with the Grivels. Does anyone stock them in the Boston area?

    Four questions about crampons

I am looking for recommendations on which steel, 10-point crampons to get for winter peak-bagging while wearing my large, insulated (800g), non-plastic boots. The boots are about the size of Sorels, but stiffer in the sole and not double boots. They are women's size 8; I would discuss them in...

Madison & Adams - Winter Begins

Excellent photos - thanks for sharing! What are you wearing for "belly" packs? They look to be just the right size.

    Stabilicers?

I recently tried Stabilicers for the first time and I'm hooked. They are boot soles with seventeen sharp studs that velcro over the soles of your boots. Mine are size S and weigh one pound, six ounces. They fit my size 8 women's Baxter State Bean boots (monster boots) perfectly and appear to...

    Winter Camping Questions

I am impressed with Mrs. KD's talent and, as someone with similar anatomy, have been wanting to ask for details. This thread has since gone into such varied territory that I no longer feel shy about asking my relatively tame question. :) So, ladies, do you use the "director" devices or go...

Great map. What's the connection to Salisbury? My next guess was going to be Greeley.

Boston Chapter (AMC) Winter Hiking Program

Who here is participating in this class? I am hesitant to start rambling about alligator eggs to random people. Feel free to say hi to me - the name on my tag says Susan Gordon. :) It was wonderful fun hearing Mohamed lecture last week after reading his writing for years.

    MSR WhisperLite Tips?

What does one use for those truly frigid trips? Say you wake up and it's minus 30. Do you switch fuels? Sleep with your fuel? Switch to wood? Book a motel room?

    Pemi Area Hike Questions

Using the WMG for elevations/mileage and calculating book time, I get 4950 ft., 15.4 miles and 10:10 for day one of your Pemi loop (including West Bond). Water is available at Black Brook and Guyot. I haven't personally been to Guyot but I believe it is a short hike down to the water source...

    Headlamp

I love my Petzl Zipka Plus and use it for everything, including night hiking. If I'm in camp it lives in my pocket, otherwise it lives in my pack. In the tent it goes under my camelback to make a lava lamp, or in an orange stuff sack for mood lighting, or around a Nalgene or my wrist if I just...

Does anybody actually read the guide first?

Small three-ring binder: $4.75 Kinko's cutting and drilling WMG: $12.08 It will be good to be able to grab a few pages and take them backpacking ... I learned after my last (also first) trip that there was a good water source a few hundred yards away from Zeta Pass. My new filter looks a...

Does anybody actually read the guide first?

I just received my second copy of the WMG from Amazon today (at $15.61 an excellent cost/benefit ratio for the piece of gear I use the most, plus I've worn through my original set of maps in places). I was planning to take a drill press, and perhaps a table saw, to this copy to do exactly what...
