I am thinking about purchasing a handheld GPS for both hiking and boating. I dont want to break the bank, however color would be nice along with the option to download maps. Any suggestions? Thanks,

Bob

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx or GPSMAP 76CSx would most likely do the job.

The units are electrically identical, only the cases differ. The 60 series was originally designed for hiking (rugged case, fits in a pocket a bit better), the 76 series for nautical use (sits on a table better, a bit bigger). In practice, they both work well in either environment--choose which ever one you prefer.

You are likely to want to buy topo maps and charts for either. (Get a 2 GB microSD datacard for either.)
