trails: road walk, bald mountain trail

conditions: from about 7.6 miles north of jackman on rt. 201 we went right onto bald mountain road. this road was in good shape and passable in any vehicle. at about 4.1 in we turned left onto notch road which immediately became rougher. most will want to park in the next .2 miles and walk trail road from there to the trailhead. we took the right onto trail road and were able to drive roughly halfway to the trailhead from there. high clearance and 4wd pretty much mandatory. it would be possible to push it to the trailhead, but not worth it and we parked off the side of the road and walked the rest of the way. the trail was marked with a sign and had blue blazing along its length. the footing was wet and slick in the woods with some significant muddy sections, but the open ledges up high and around the summit were dry. the footbed up high in the open sections is a bit obscure at times. good info. for this hike in the amc maine mountain guide.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: nice follow up hike to coburn in the morning. great views from the summit with a particularly enticing view of the mountains nearby eastern summit that will hopefully be a destination for a future hike.
