trails: caverly road, caverly mountain loop trail, bushwhack, atv path, caverly road short cut

conditions: parked at the start of caverly road off of kings highway about 4.8 miles north of middleton corners in new durham. plent of room to park out of the way of neighboring driveways at the start of the road which has a gate, open today, and numerous snowmobile and atv related signs at its start. i walked caverly road, which had a dusting of snow, up to its eastern junction with the caverly mountain loop trail and turned off onto the loop trail which is maintained for snowmobile and atv use and well signed. trail was in good shape with a continued dusting of snow up to the broad summit of caverly mountain. the trail continued to the northwest view point, but i bushwhacked south a short distance to the highpoint and south facing ledges following the ledge around the south end of the mountain before heading back north and picking up an atv track that led back to the trail and outlook. some ice around the upper ledges. from there i followed the western branch of the loop down over ledges, some spotty ice, and into a logged area. after this point the trail pretty well coincided with an old skidder road down to a junction with the shortcut trail back to caverly road. one could also stay on the loop trail to caverly road which would add a bit more distance to the hike. i clocked the hike at just under 5 miles including some poking around on the summit.

equipment: blaze orange.

comments: a beautiful day to check out a relatively local peak i had yet to hike. noticed this one this morning on a map and with a little research set out to check it out. some nice walking and a beautiful summit area with open woods and multiple ledgy viewpoints the northwest one being the view of note. great views to the belknaps and across the lake to the waterville valley and moosilauke areas. the southern ledges had good views to copple crown and the moose mountains as well as merrymeeting lake. nice hike.
