1kJ is 239 calories, lowercase, or .239 Calories. Some idiot decided that capital C means kilo in this case, and "food Calories" on nutritional information are cap-C.

Put another way, the "Calories" on food nutrition labels in the US are actually kilo-calories. So a 2000 "Calorie" diet is actually 2,000,000 calories (lower case c) per day. Burning 2,900,000 calories in cold weather seems right.
