The Lake Road has good snow cover, but is somewhat chewed up with snowmobile tracks. This could be pretty bumpy for skiing if it firms up over night. There is some smoother snow on the edges most of the way, though. The snow surface on the road was soft enough today that snowshoes were more comfortable than microspikes. In fact, our snowshoes were sufficient for the entire hike.

We took the Gill Brook Cut-off trail from the road, then the standard trails the rest of the way. We packed down a fresh 1-4 inches of fresh snow, with up to 7 inches in a few spots. Our return trip from Blake involved noticeably softer snow on the trail back up to Colvin, as the sun shone brightly. We were bombarded a few times by masses of wet snow falling from trees. The butt-sliding both to and from Blake summit was the best of the year! A ton of fun!
