I was attempting to climb up the North Slide trail and make the loop on Monday. At the first junction of the Livermore trail and the Tripyramid loop there's a new USFS sign. All the arrows point right including one that says Livermore trail. So we went right and ended up ascending the South slide. No big deal, but we wanted to ascend the North. On the descent, we opted for Scaur Ridge and had a very easy and pleasant walk down. Back at the junction we checked out the sign again and apparently the sign is indicating the distance to South peak, North peak, and the complete distance back to Livermore trail. Confusing, especially since all guide books recommend this climb in the opposite direction. Even though Livermore trail is quite obvious on the left, there is no signage indicating so.

Continue on Livermore Rd until it makes a 120 deg left turn (beginning of a long switchback). The trail to the north slide is on the right.

We saw this on our way down.

That Sign is Confusing

You are not alone. When we did the loop (following the intended route) last year, we passed someone who had gone up South instead of the North Slide. (She was going to descend the North Slide, which we vigorously discouraged.) The sign is confusing.

Years back I made that mistake, went up the South and down the North (it's not that bad) but I've never made that particular mistake again. :)

The first time I did this years ago, a friend told me that the right way would not look like the right way. I started out on Waterville Valley and ended up on the Kang Highway going right over the summit and never getting the other 2. That's what I get for listening to an ex boyfriend.

The next time I did it, a few years ago, I was determined not to make the same mistake but I did find it not clear and maybe part of that was my nervousness from the previous experience. This time I made it over all 3. I was glad I didn't screw up twice in a row.
