USFS Opening Re-routed Gale River Trail on Thursday, 8/18/11

According to this AMC press release:

"Hikers, please take note! The Gale River Trail relocation has been completed by the USFS and the new trail is set to open this Thursday, August 18. The trail has been relocated to stay on the west side of the Gale River, which eliminates two hazardous crossings in high water. The old trail will be brushed in and a sign will be placed at the junctions directing hikers to the new trail.

Note the relocated section (in pink, at right) of the trail is roughly one mile long, extending the Gale River Trail's full length by a quarter of a mile. "

This was not a mostly volunteer effort. It was done by the Pemi District trail crew

The trail actually did not open on the 18th. It opened today. Steve Smith was out there computing the mileage for the new guide as both ends were being opened up. The old segment has now been blocked off. There will be more work done to smooth out a few of the rougher segments, but as one hiker said today, that is the softest trail I have ever hiked in the Whites. Too bad that can't last.
