There's a fun and rather interesting piece in today's New York Times about the firetower Jack Kerouac manned back in the day. It's written by a non-hiker for non-hkers, but is well-written.

I'm not sure what defines a hiker writing for hikers but that was one helluva trip report. Without trying in convince me it inspires me.

Ah crap. Now America knows the secret of the North Cascades. Maybe if we told them about the possibility of encountering this, it would deter the hordes some.

I had to laugh at this line:

"I found Kerouac’s “masterpiece” rambling and frivolous; it took me two years to get through it."

Thought I was the only weirdo out there who felt this way. Come to think of it, I still haven't gotten through it...
