backpacked from Lafayette Campground to Kinsman Pond shelter on Tuesday and returned on Wednesday.
Trail to LL Hut is very well packed. Most were using snowshoes but microspikes or even barebooting would be fine. Around Lake and on Fishin J trail snow was looser, less packed. The short stretch of Kinsman Pond trail to the shelter was all new powder, unbroken.
Snowshoes very helpful to essential on Fishin Jimmy trail.
Thanks very much to the unregistered hiker who broke trail to N Kinsman a few days ago. Those were the only tracks past Lonesome Lake on Tuesday. A little new snow and some drifting Tuesday night (which got close to zero at the Pond) made snowshoes essential or very close to. I did not summit N Kinsman but a few hikers were on their way up as I hiked out Wed. A beautiful night.
