Middle Carter via N. Imp, N. Carter & Carter Moriah Trails, S. Imp on the way down

Date1-8-2011

North Imp Trail: Very Icy with a lot of bare spots below the Imp Face. Above the Face there the trail were only a couple bare spots and no ice. Evidence of post holes

North Carter Trail: Light dusting of new snow (1 inch). Some minor post holing on the sides of the trail.

Carter Moriah Trail: Light Duting of new snow ( 1 inch with a couple of drifts 4-6 inches). Minor post holing on the trail and ice on the rocks covered with snow.

Southern Imp: packed snow with some rocky spots after a huge downed tree across the trail.

Used micro-spikes the entire way up without much difficulty but switched to snow shoes for the decent for better traction and to avoid the minor post holing. Switched back to micro-spikes after the huge downed tree on the Southern Imp trail due to bare spots.

Special Equipment Required: Some type of traction essential- Snowshoes were useful.

Comments: A great day for hiking, zero wind all day! Good views from the Imp Face and Middle Carter Mt, of Mt Washington (except the summit was in the clouds), The valley and northern presidentials.
