Date of Hike: 2/14/2012
Trail Conditions: Crawford Path: from US-302 to ridgeline near Pierce summit, hard-packed snow, no ice, very easy hiking. From Pierce down to Eisenhower-Pierce col, mostly hard-packed, but a few drifts 2-3 feet covering the track, easy hiking but route finding not as easy. Up and down Eisenhower, rock and ice with minor drifting snow. Up Monroe, windpacked, very hard (I didn't leave any footprints at times!); trail harder and harder to follow so I just headed up any which way. Down Monroe to Lakes of Cloud Hut, 3-4 foot deep snow.
Ammo: hard packed obvious trail (except the 300 feet above treeline) which has seen lots of boot traffic, a "highway" as they say. Some icy sections at higher elevations, but it looks like everyone drove on the shoulder to stay in the snow.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - useful in the Eisenhower-Pierce col,
Crampons - essential for Monroe,
Crampons - useful for Ammo.
Comments: To make a loop, roadwalk from Ammo Trailhead to US-302 via the cog road and Clinton Road. Clinton Rd is open to snowmobiles, so it was easy walking.
