trails: ammonoosuc ravine trail, crawford path, monroe loop, trinity heights connector, gulfside trail, jefferson loop, adams snowfields, airline, osgood trail, valley way

conditions: ammo well packed to the hut with little ice. a mix of windpacked and crusty snow and drifted powder to monroe. much of the same up to washington. same nice footing continued along gulfside to sphinx col. leaving washington we hugged the cog tracks before cutting over to gulfside near the clay loop junction. the current tracked route up jefferson stays to the west of the loop most of the way to the summit. the snowfield on jefferson was traversed with little difficulty though there have been some interesting route choices in that area. from edmands col to adams the trail was pretty bony to start then had deeper snow up to the base of adams cone. we picked a nice looking snowfield and just headed up. the same mix of packed snow and powder down to madison hut. decent snow coverage to madison with a fair amount of rock just below the summit. valley way well packed with some ice in a few sections. all water crossings along ammo and valley way were frozen.

equipment: i wore snowshoes the whole day and cynthia switched to microspikes for madison and the descent.

comments: this was the day we had been waiting all month for. good temps, relatively light winds and nice footing. a beautiful sunny day, particularly pretty in the morning along ammo and crawford path. enough snow coverage to do a fair amount of direct hiking up to the summits rather than sticking solely to the trails. pretty quiet up there and we seemed to know almost everyone we ran into today. great day to be out. thanks cynthia.
