Trail: Appalachian Trail

Conditions: snow-free, early spring flowers blossoming, a few black flies

Comments: We decided to hike a section of the AT and began in Etna, NH newar the cemetery. The first two miles were pretty woods, then we crossed a road and began to climb. The summit is somewhat open because of a 1968 Northeast Airlines plane crash, fire, and insect infestation. We found bits and pieces of the plane's remnants and two geocaches. Met a trail crew from the DOC who were working on the new Nat Thompson Trail. From there we continued on to the shelter, then back tracked a bit to a side trail, which we followed down to the west, eventually picking up Three Mile Road for a loop walk to the 2-mile section we had started out on. Ten pleasant miles. The thunderstorms missed us! Saw trillium and trout lilly just beginning to bloom and some yellow violets just passing. Heard warblers and an oven bird.
