more freakin’ nonsense.

Agiocochook doesn't exactly roll off your tongue.
Four syllables. Is that any harder to pronounce than Misquamicut? Chattanooga? Ammonusuck? Connecticut? Massachusetts? Chocorua?

For anyone who is interested in a truly A+ handling of the politics of changing the name of a mountain, have a listen to "Two Mountains" by The Dirtbag Diaries. Nuanced, informative, brilliant!

Actually, 5 syllables. So, yes, it is too hard to pronounce...

The alternative Abenaki spelling is Agiochook, so only four syllables (Mount can be dropped as superfluous), just like Mount Washington’s four syllables.

Florida’s CNL Financial Group, which owned the Mount Washington Hotel in 2011-2012, patented the name Mount Washington, but only for hotels and the like, and not other businesses.

I am entirely in favor of returning to the original name Agiochook for New Hampshire’s tallest mountain, which would put our state in the same league as Maine with its Katahdin (again, Mount is redundant, regardless what the BGN and USGS indicate on maps).

Just from a tourist point of view, the fame and reputation Washington has earned cannot just be wiped away in a name change. This will not happen.

Yeah the name Washington is ubiquitous up there. It would be a real uphill battle to change hearts and minds.

There was an attempt several years ago to change the name of Mt Clay to Mt Reagan, the NH legislature supported it but the board did not approve it. On the other hand Mt Adams 4 to Abigal Adams

And, Mt Pleasant became Ike and Mt Clinton became Pierce. When will Mount Truman be approved by the BGN, or has it already?

Oh, you poor white guy! The folks who named the mountain didn't agree with you.
Of course they didn't. On the other hand, they probably knew how many syllables were in Agiocochook. You, however, a Cambridge educated white man, did not. (And, the alternate spelling was not referenced in this thread)

So boring to have one of 15 peaks in North America named Mount Washington, including five in Washington state alone. We even have a tourist boat on Lake Winnepesaukee named the Mount Washington, which is particularly lame.

That article is ludicrous. There's more slavery in the world in our time than back then, but let's ignore that (after all, some of the slaves are producing green energy equipment!) and instead convict an American hero for the sins of his time.
